Interview for Squared Circle News

2003

Patch: Morgan Dollar, hello and welcome to Patch's Place. Thanks for coming down to talk some wrestling with me.
Morgan: Patch brother,Man you got it going on right here on the Squared Circle news.Man this Squared Circle news is hotter than a microwave oven brother. Its my honor to have this interview with you.

Patch: Could you give our readers some background info about yourself, such as height, weight, age, hometown, and hobbies outside the ring.
Morgan:Patch man Im at 5'10 176 lbs. but that changes you know.I got lucky back in 94 and married the last of the best women out there brother.Annette,Man... she came into my life man and made me who I am today brother.Im 38 and right now living in the greatest area of Professional wrestling brother.Winston-Salem,NC. The old Crockett area.Man Patch, you know brother we got this farm land up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains 56 acres brother, two story house,an hour away from home.We go there on the weekends Im not working and just hangout brother.Listen to the birds, watch the deer play in the backyard. Its a wonderful place.Away from all the hussle and bussle man.Its just a relaxing place.

Patch: You were trained as a referee by a mutual friend of ours, Jimmy Valiant. Is training to be a ref different than the training the wrestlers go through? If so, in what way?
Morgan:Well patch man you know if it wasnt for the chosen few, the Zebra's if you will,There wouldnt be any wrestling. You know Patch, the Refs never get credit for there work in the ring. They work more on any giving night than a wrestler. The training is somewhat different all though you got to learn several moves. The main thing is ring psychology. You need to be able to know whats going on all around you. My saying has always been A Ref cant wrestle and Wrestler cant Ref. I was with Harley Race awhile back and ask him what he thought was his best match. His reply was,Dollar man I wanted the Flair match at Starcade to be my best. But that $@%^&* Keninski was all in the way.Made it a terrible match. So that goes to show that a wrestler dont need to Ref. A Ref can make or break a Wrestling match brother.Paul Jones told me, Allways make the ringside fans mad and the rest will follow...SO TRUE! Jimmy Valiant has opened up doors for me that very few people get to see.Over on my website www.refmorgandollar.com (Patch brother,Im not trying to plug my website you understand) I got some pictures of different people I have had the honor of meeting.Im talking old school brother,Hey Boogie even hooked me up with Stevie Wonder.Thats right brother.Boogie is good friends with Stevie. You know Patch when we met Stevie, later on that night at his show he heard us and hollered out over the microphone...DOLLAR I hear ya Brother come on up here.It was awesome Patch Man.

Patch: Morgan, when and where did you work your first show? Who's match did you work?
Morgan:Again I aint trying to plug nothing you know but over at www.refmorgandollar.com I talk about my first match. It was in Mountain City Tn.Feb.2000 Jimmy Valiants road dog Bruiser Graham was in the match And I cant remember who the other person was.I know Bruiser won because he helped me out alot in my training and I will always look up to Bruiser Graham,he is just a super person to know. And I love him like my own brother man.

Patch: What is your favorite match to work? Tags, singles, or specialty?
Morgan:Patch brother,You know I've Ref'ed them all.Barbed wire,Street fight,No dq,No timelimit.Cage match.I can hang with them all. Every type of Match has its on special eliments that are so different. I just love them all man.

Patch: Have you ever been accused of making the wrong call? Or laying down a fast count?
Morgan:Patch,my main bird dog! You asking me if I have ever screwed up? Brother,Brother. The Ref with,"THE FINAL SAY"? I get accused of it all the time. A Ref only has one set of eyes. you get two, four, six wrestlers in the ring you know the best of the best cant see it all, now. You see if a wrestler really makes me mad.I have the power to make the end result what ever I want it to be. So they know up front both sides have a chance to win. But if they make the Ref mad the odds of winning are lowered.

Patch: Who would you most like to ref a match between?
Morgan:You know I have Ref'ed so many matches and so many matches involving Jimmy Valiant.I would love to have been around in Jimmy's hay day. He is so smooth in the ring brother. He just floats on the air man. Jimmy is still on top of his game. But back then.it was poetry brother. They told the story in the ring. Not like todays times. I aint going to plug nothing. But you know,Jimmy Valiant starts his fair well tour the first of 2004. With his last match on Dec. 25,2004 in Greenville,SC.Im proud to say that I was scheduled to Ref that match for Jimmy. But the promoter that was putting the show on canceled the show.  Another promoter is putting the show on and has his own Ref to take care of that match.Jimmy is writting a book also.It will be published after his final match. My wife and I will always hold a special place in our heart for Boogie and Angel Valiant. You can keep up with Jimmy over at www.jimmyvaliant.com

Patch: What is the toughest match you've ever worked?
Morgan: Patch Man...This is a loaded question. The toughest but yet the easiest has been against Wild Shane West and Gary The Madd Trucker Stevens. They had a heck of a run probably over 8-9 months. They've had some pretty bad fueds. But because of their work ethics and training constantly. They got it going on brother. They going places in this business. They have since settled there differences and realized they needed to tag up.Now they are unstopable. They are getting TV time now working as a tagteam in CWF and are being called by promoters all over man. They work all up and down the east coast now.Im proud to call them two of my best friends in this business.Which means alot to me.

Patch: Who are some of your favorite wrestlers?
Morgan:You like putting us on the spot now don't you, Patch Man?The Indy Talent has SO MANY unseen super stars it is unreal. With only one top dog in the business right now.The Indy stars are being left behind I think. But the all time greats in the big time are in my opinion are Race,Valiant,Flair,Brisco's Nick Bockwinkle,Steamboat,Youngblood and so many more. You know a good friend of mine Mike Davis he went by Bugsy McGraw he was super to.Right now in the WWE,Benoit,Angle. They are the two top stars, the best workers and its time Benoit gets a strap.

Patch: If you were working in the WWE, who would you like to ref a match between?
Morgan:Any of them! No really, I think it would be awesome to Ref a match with Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels. Two class act people still in the business.

Patch: What is the worst match you've ever called?
Morgan:They've all been for the upmost good. But a situation not to long ago in Kings Mountain,NC. I was riding with two wrestlers that was going to stop by and pick me up.They had been working out of state and was running behind. So we get below Charlotte,NC and call the promoter on the cell phone. The promoter wanted to know if I was with them,They said ya. He says,We got Morgan covered till intermission.Cool we was only about 20 minutes out and the first match was gettng ready to start. We get there, walk in the locker room...hey...hey...hey. I sit down take my street clothes off and start putting my work clothes on.All the sudden they start yelling for me.The SECOND match is on.The wrestlers are in the ring,They need you out there Morgan! Now I had never been to this show.I didnt know where to go or anything. They said go through the curtain you will see the ring. So,Im going to the curtain in my underwear.Needless to say.I didnt have time to stretch or anything.I blowed up in the ring myself! But thats ok.Cause the other Ref can take care of the next match. After the match I go in the back sit down and they say,What are you doing? IM RESTING, WHY? O-yea, the Ref just covered until you got here. You got the rest of the show.He has left the building! So here I go again. It worked out fine. But thats the way this business is.Non-stop.

Patch: Morgan, is there anyone that you would not ref a match between?
Morgan:Yes,Backyard wrestlers or any untrained wrestlers.Thats what gets people hurt and killed in this business and I dont want to be apart of it.My job is to keep law and order and also to make sure everyone is all right.

Patch: Describe the man behind Morgan Dollar.
Morgan: You only see Morgan Dollar at a show.Thats the trick to surviving in this business. You can not forget where you came from.Keep your feet on the ground. And you will make it in this business.I was recently in RAW magazine. You can not let stardom take you over and start beleiving what they write about you.Thats why I usually dont give interviews. But for my main Bird Dog Patch, anytime.Morgan gets a natural high from hearing the fans boo/cheer him.Thats his job.If for one night Morgan can make the fans forget about how they are going to pay there bills,Forget about the lapsed car insurance,Forget about being behind on there rent or there mortgage payments.Morgans job is done.Morgan wants to add to the excitement. You know Patch I have been dealing with a in ring back injury. My L-5,S-1 disc in my back is shot.I have been taking steriod shots in my spinal cord to releive the pain.I took two months off to try to get it to heal. And it has not.January I get another shot.If things are not better by Feb. We will make plans to have surgery. Im schedule to Ref a siminar in Las Vegas in April But the bad thing is You know Dollar might not get to Ref anymore. But I have been ask by so many Promoters If I would in some Capacity still be a part of there show. They claim I create so much "heat" with the fans that they want me booked for them.I hold that in high regards and am glad the promoters are wanting to book me. But the man behind Morgan Dollar is a heart giving man. He helps out with Charities,Benefits and never charges for those if they are legit.Loves to eat,Loves music and spending time with his close friends.

Patch: Morgan, we give the stars we interview a chance to say whatever they want about the wrestling business. This is your time. Shoot...
Morgan:Professional Wrestling is for ever changing. It has cycles just like any other business. There is only one national Wrestling Promotion right now. That is leaving so much great talent in the Indies behind. Some people dont like the WWE,some do.But if you want to see some great talent.Checkout the local indy shows. Most are family oriented. No cussing, jestures or anything like that by the wrestlers. Now the fans get excited. But remember the Indys if you are a wrestling fan.It is said to say but there will never be a national "OLD SCHOOL" promotion televised. Thats a part of history that is slowly disapearing.

Patch: Where can fans find you on the web?
Morgan: Patch Man,thank you! I have been wanting to plug my website in this entire interview. You can check me out over at www.refmorgandollar.com and dont forget to sign the guestbook so I will know you been there.

Patch: Any final words?
Morgan:Don't nobody ever forget us Referee's. We are seldom bragged or talked about. But if it wasnt for us the chosen few there wouldnt be any wrestling. We are the Law of Professional wrestling.

Patch: Morgan Dollar, thanks for taking the time to talk with me. Best of luck in the future.
Morgan:My main bird dog Patch! Wall to Wall and Tree top tall,Wooo Mercy,Squared circle news.On top of the mountain baby, looking down at all the others! Putting all the rest in the back of the bus brother!Walking the dogs and leading the puppies! Patch Man,Come See me.God Bless you and all the Dollar fans.....

Dollars Drive
By Morgan Dollar

Although I get booed more often than not, this is what I chose to do. You the fans, are the one that drives the desire to do what I have been told I do so well.

But as Referee Earl Hebner once said in a WWE Interview,You get noticed for the bad things you do, but not for the good things you do, so that keeps us going. As long as someone's hollering at us, we know we're doing a good job" Earl Hebner is the Senior Referee for WWE with Eighteen Years under his belt.

The training I went through with The Legendary Jimmy "Boogie Woogie Man" Valiant, was by no means a cake walk. The sweat, tears and pain I have gone through is nothing compared to hearing the fans cheering or even booing me when I'm doing what I love so much. If it's in a building with just two people or two thousand you still are going to get your money's worth!

When this "part" of my life first began. It was tough!

I always reflect back on the Rest area on Hwy. 81(between Radford, VA. and Christiansburg, VA.) I had worked a show in a little town west of Wilmington, NC. the night before. And my Desire to get back to Shawsville, VA for BWC Camp training on Sunday to help out the new boys was all that was on my mind. I had been on the road for over 8 hours driving. Getting to VA ahead of schedule, I decided to sleep a few hours.

Three hours later at the rest area my alarm clock went off. "Man, is this what I really want to do?" I thought. On the road, away from home, sleeping in a car, (Thank God for reclining seats!) mainly bouncing from one town to the next. Then I decided to get out and stretch awhile. And this kid, I don't recall his name, he walks up and asked me, "Mr. watcha doing all bent up like that?" I told him I was stretching!

He looked at me again and said, "I know you! You "wrassle". I seen you in Mount Airy, NC." I explained to him I was not a Wrestler but I was a Referee in Wrestling. Then he proceeds to tell me, he didn't like what I done to Jimmy Valiant at Mount Airy (he called it home). "But I like you anyway!" he said.

If that little kid had only known what that meant to me... That's why I'm on the road, away from home, sleeping in the car or in some Motel room somewhere between amazing grace and raising H#LL, and eating at Truck Stops or Waffle Houses at 3 and 4 in the morning. The Fans, that's what it's all about. If it wasn't for the fans, there wouldn't be Wrestling.

And yeah, the little kid, after he ran and got his parents. I told him, "Hey buddy! Hold on a second. I might have something in the car for ya! I went to the trunk and got him a,"Remember, The Ref. has The FINAL SAY!" Morgan Dollar T-Shirt signed it and gave it to him. He put it on over his other shirt and was a happy "camper"!

I left and went on to BWC and had a blast! Now you know what drives us in the Wrestling Business. YOU the FANS! Would I change things? NAH. Is this what I really want to do for the rest of my life? You bet it is! I wouldn't miss this dance for nothing. And you will be hearing about Morgan $ for along time!

Till next time, Remember, the Ref. has the FINAL SAY

I am "THE ONE" Morgan $

Dollar's Drive has appeared on numerous websites, and after plenty of thought.I have decided to place it on my site as a simple THANK YOU to the FANS of this crazy sport I love so much...Thank you,$
